Guild
newsletters in the United Kingdom were buzzing with travel plans in July.
The Association of Guilds of Weavers,
Spinners, and Dyers brings together over one hundred guilds in the UK, as
well as the international
Online
Guild, for a biennial
National Exhibition.
Weald & Downland Open Air Museum
in Sussex, England, hosted the event on July 16-27, 2012. The Exhibition has
two parts: Selected Work (juried show) and Unselected Work. The theme for the Unselected
Work exhibit, in keeping with the London Olympics, was rings. Members were invited
to submit artwork that fit within a 6-inch ring. The work could be created
using any combination of fiber arts techniques, and the ring must have been
included in the final piece. The
Berkshire
Guild of Spinners, Weavers, and Dyers selected three rings for the National
Exhibition from its membership this year. To see the 2012 selections, and those
of past years, visit the guild's
Competition page.
The National
Exhibition coincided with the Rare Breed
Show, an annual event hosted by the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum
for the past twenty-seven years. The show holds competitions for rare breed
sheep, cattle, goats, and pigs. There are also categories for fleeces, on and
off the hoof, and handspun yarns.
