Worldwide Spin in Public Day, first held in
2009, was organized by a group of spinners who hoped to bring greater attention
to the handspinning community. They hope the annual event "educates the
public about our love of spinning, opens minds and hearts to what we love, and
allows us to meet new people, get together, and just have a really fun day!"
Gatherings have been scheduled in Austria, Australia, Sweden, and the United
States. The Birmingham and
District Guild of Spinners, Weavers, and Dyers (England) is planning a
demonstration in Birmingham's City Centre.
Spinners in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area
are invited to spend the day spinning at Old Economy Village, a historic Harmonist
settlement and museum. The event is being organized by Mary Malyszka, a museum
volunteer and spinner. Mary read about Spin in Pubic Day on Ravelry and
approached the museum about hosting an event. She says, "I thought it would be great fun to have a bunch of area spinners
get together in this historic setting." Mary and the museum staff are
looking forward to their first Spin in Public Day.
