Spin-Off Spring 2010

Judith MacKenzie’s scrumptious article on page 62 about spinning a plump silky singles starts with a description of weavers as basically falling into two camps: those who love the structure and order of weaving and those who love weaving for the color and texture.

Spinners lightbulbs will pop on when they read Abby Franquemont’s article about the difference between bobbin-driven and flyer-driven wheels (page 44) and others whose eyes will glaze over until someone waves a lock of raw wool under their nose to revive them. Some spinners will take Amelia Garripoli’s article (page 40) with them as they purchase a new spindle to reference the finer points of spindle weights, while others will let their instincts guide them in their purchase.

I love the cover on Spring 2010 issue and the article by Judith MacKenzie on page 62.  The colors are amazing.  I am curious about the dye used.  I use several different brands and types but so far have not been able to get those rich jewel tones.  I'd love to know what dye was used.  Thanks for another great issue.  Sheryl Webb, north Idaho

I was excited to see Patsy Sue Zawistoski's article on the Ramie Necklace as I too use my inkle loom (which my husband made me) to create necklaces.  What I'd like to know is where she purchased the large funnel cap ends she used to finish her necklace.  I recently went through a large catalog of beads and findings but could not find one that looks like the one she used, which has a fan shape to it. Can someone tell me a brand name or help me find one?

I have to tell you - I had been thinking of not renewing my Subscription to Spin Off but these last couple of issues have been fantastic. Now that my sister bought a spinning wheel - she needs to have the Spring 2010 issue for reference. Wheel mechanics, what wool to spin , double drive vs single drive... and so much more. What cute patterns.
