I'm just getting started into spinning and I was thinking about building my own spinning wheel because new ones are so expensive. I found the plans on this site for the dodec spinning wheel but I'm not sure how to use it once I'm done building it. does anyone know of a good demo for it, possibly on youtube?
WOW! you are ambitious! I did a quick Google search and found this. the first one is about the Dodec wheel and has several how to build it videos and a video on how to spin on it. The second video is a demo of how to spin on a similar wheel, also handmade, but not a Dodec, it just that uses the same quill principle.
Others can probably explain it better, but the Dodec seems to be a quill wheel similar to a Great Wheel. There is also a wheel out there called a Penguin ( http://prairiesend.com/spinning/penguin.asp ) that is similar to the Dodec wheel. The website unfortunately does not have a "how to spin" video but I am sure others may know or just look up Great Wheel spinning, it should be similar.
Here is a video online by the designer showing how to spin on the Dodec:

Thank you for posting the free plans. I made myself one and I really had no previous woodworking skills! If I can do it, anyone can do it!! Here's a link to the one I made. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVnfKVe5_Dk
