Hi There,

Could anybody help me identify this spinning wheel?  I bought it from an antique dealer in Burford, Oxon in about 2005.  I believe it is a flax wheel; because it has a distaff, and two small bobbins.

As I wish to spin wool this isn't appropriate for my needs, so I will be looking for a suitable wheel.

Thanks

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

your beautiful wheel looks very like a Norwegian flax wheel to me.

Although they were made primarily to spin flax you will also be able to spin fine lace yarn wool on it. Wish I could buy it from you but I live too far away...

Greetings from Iceland

Beautiful double wheel. Looks more like a east European combination flax/wool wheel. Should work just fine for wool. If that wheel is as heavy as it looks it should be a great treadler! Tune it up, lube it up, get some wool & have at it. I've used one like it for wool for 35 years & it's just fine. Good luck with a real beauty. My Best - Jerry

You have a lovely wheel made in Sweden, circa 1875.

Here is mine for comparison:

This has to be one of my favorite wheels.
