I want to spin two ply yarn like Black Water Abbey yarn.  Rather coarse - for Aran sweaters.  I cannot seem to find the right fiber to begin my projects.  All the wool fibers I have spun have been too soft and smooth.  What can I do??

You probably will want to spin a harder yarn.

  • You'll want to use carded top
  • spin a fingered draft (more inch-worm or point-of-draft) and have enough twist that it will have the structure to hold up for the patterns.
  • You don't want warp thread, but a well defined twist - you still want it comfortable enough to wear.
  • I used an ewe Lincoln/Targhee cross for my dad's sweater.
  • Check your control yarn - pull out some lengths and see how it twists upon itself. If it is too soft, add more twist to the singles (maybe change to a faster whirl)

I hope this helps.
