  • Re: Hello. New around these parts!

Also, keep your hands at least 3-4 inches apart. If you are pulling too close, you can't get the fiber to separate and let the twist ride up the wool. And one more thing: Let go a bit. If you hold the wool too tight, it will also fight with you. The rest is just practice! Good luck. barb

  • Re: Trouble with noils

Combing will get out the noils. Having a lot of fiber left on your comb after dizzing could be caused by several things: 1) packing to much fiber on the comb initially, 2) there will be a lot of waste if the fleece you are working with has a lot of vegetable matter, second cuts, etc. and 3) you aren't...

  • Dye yarn before or after

I learned to spin back in the mid-70s. Up until a year ago I used my yarn to knit up small projects and to perfect the craft (learning to spin other fibers than wool--alpaca, yak, silk, cashmere, etc, etc--and learning special techniques to make designer yarns). The last few months I've been spinning...

  • All the steps

Hello! I am severely new, meaning I don't even have a spindle yet, but I'm confused as to the whole process - from a bunch of fluffy fiber to a finished product like a scarf. I know spinning is first. Do I wind it into balls straight away after I've spun it? Is plying second? What is this...

  • Winter 2011 issue--Natural Fiber Directory

Dear Editors of Spin-Off, I just picked up the new issue of Spin-off at JoAnn's, Etc. yesterday, and immediately fell in love with the sheep shown on the front of the Natural Fiber Directory in the center of the magazine. Could you tell me what kind of sheep this is? This sheep reminds me of those...

  • Any success cleaning old fleece?

I have a wool fleece that I bought at least 15 years ago and have stored in an old French burlap mailbag (another story). The fleece still looks like it did when I got it, at least there doesn't seem to be any damage to the naked eye, but it needs cleaned to get some grease out. Am I too late? Has...

  • consistency

When I'm spinning if I don't watch the fiber, sometimes when I don't the fiber is real thin - how do I stop this? Should I take out the thin part and re-do? How can I avoid this? Thanks - Martha
