Handspun Lyme Regis Scarf

I was very excited when I received my Spring 2013 issue of Spinoff to see a scarf design by Kirsti Johanson on the front cover. I had just finish spinning River's Edge Fiber Arts Merino/Bamboo/Nylon and achieved 196 yards but wasn't sure what to make with it until I saw the Lyme Regis Scarf. My handspun was almost the same colors as the handspun used, which was even more thrilling. My project page can be viewed on Ravelry or on my blog.

I carded a bunch of hand dyed farm wool with Angelina and bits of random fiber. I then spun a single and plied it with a metallic thread.

This is hand-spun alpaca from the fleece of Alpaca Huacayas raised in Brittany/ France/ Europe. It is a three-ply yarn. The yarn of the ball on the right side is thicker. I made a helix scarf with it, which is a little bit too "heavy" since Alpaca has not much elasticiy. I spun it with a Schacht double drive 1:12 (short forward or backword draw) and I plyed it single drive 1: 9. Depending on the length of the locks (1,5 - 3 inch) and the quantity of vegetable matter, I used a dog comb, mini-combs, handcarders and drum-carder to prepare it. I tried to wash a small quantity before, to see if it was better, but it was then more difficult to pick the locks before preparing them and it was more difficult to spin too. I knitted the thick yarn with U.S. needle size 7, the thin yarn with 4 and 5.

This is from one on the Eller fleeces (BL/Col-x). I started about the same time as my classwork - to save my sanity. The pattern is Lilly-of-the-Valley and Old Shale lace border.

My first sweater out of handspun

This is my first garment out of handspun. I kettle dyed various wools and ended up with two harmonious colorways. I alternated the two throughout the pattern. The pattern is Leaflet by Cecily Glowik MacDonald from Knitty First Fall 2011 and is free online. I altered it by starting the waist shaping later in the pattern and lengthening the sleeves.

Extreme Spinning outdoors

Opulent Raglan in handspun undyed zwartbles wool

Wendy Bernard's Opulent Raglan from Interweave. I spun the wool from raw zwartbles fleece (I even met the sheep!) It's as black as can be, except for the sun-bleached tips, which give the finished yarn more of a dark chocolate colour.

It was fun to knit and I think suits me well.

Dorset virgin lamb fleece dyed with Magic Carpet Dyes (rug hooking)

Christine Littles Antique Colors and Spots #12 Cranberry formula adapted to my own needs.

1 pound wet wool added to stove top vinegar bath, formula's poured over and simmered 1 hr.

2 ply.

I dyed this wool in my microwave using kool-aid and Wilton's food coloring! So much fun and safe, too! Then I spun it into 3 ply with Navajo plying. It will be a self-striping yarn. I plan on weaving it into a scarf. It's going to stripe with red on the ends and purple in the middle.

This pattern was in Spin-Off Magazine and was perfect pattern to make a scarf for my husband who goes for long walks everyday, even in the cold Michigan winter. I used some green hand-spun 2 ply, the project took about 400 yards. I am so pleased with the scarf, I plan to knit one in cream alpaca next.

I don't know whether it is fair to post a picture of a project made with store-bought yarn; but this scarf is the perfect gift to a friend, I just bought my first wheel, so I knitted it in 100 Pure Wool from Uruguay. Lovely pattern!

This hand-spun wool was hand dyed in colors called koi-pond and was plied with Fibre-Isle Kami Bison Lace yarn. The pattern is from "Sock-Yarn One Skein Wonders" book. and is called School at Play Scarf. This was lots of fun to knit and I can't wait to wear it.
