Practice treadling
Treadle on your spinning wheel to keep the wheel going. Practicing will allow you to build momentum and keep the wheel going in the correct direction. |

How to Ply Yarn
By Judith MacKenzie and Dodie Rush
The art of plying is the art of creating plied yarn by twisting together two or more singles with a reverse twist. The term singles refers to a yarn with a single twist. Plying makes the finished yarn more consistent, much stronger, more efficient, and certainly more stable.
There are many techniques available for plying. Plying with a spinning wheel allows you to have a very consistent twist throughout. Plying takes only about a third of the time it took to spin the original singles. Learning how to ply yarn on a wheel is a snap!
Dodie will also walk you through “Navajo plying”, which is a technique for plying chained singles to produce a three-ply yarn from a bobbin of singles yarn. It is accomplished by “chaining” loops (like crocheting). Navajo plying is also used to create various color effects. |

How to choose your first spinning wheel
By Rudy Amann
There are many spinning wheels available, and all of them will add twist to fiber and spin yarn. But some spinning wheels will be a better match for each spinner. In addition to price, there are some important things to consider that can usually narrow the choice to just a few wheels. Rudy walks you through the different factors to consider when choosing a spinning wheel:
- Which hand is your spinning or orifice hand and which hand is the fiber hand?
- Where will you be using your spinning wheel?
- How much space do you have?
- How do you position your feet on the treadle?
- What fibers and what type of yarn will you be spinning?
The appearance of the spinning wheel can be an important factor as well. You should enjoy looking at it. Download these tips and good luck finding the perfect spinning wheel for you!
